Business Venture.

In California, Fitness, Personal Trainer, San Diego on October 31, 2012 at 3:07 am

My life has been pretty crazy.

This happened today…

Flat truck tire.

Not just any ole flat, a driving down the freeway blow-out flat. I mean, only me.

Anyways, I’ve been working hard at mapping out a business plan for myself. I have settled on the name C² Fitness and working on websites, social network sites, etc… Oh, and the whole legal/business side of everything. I hope to be fully launched the beginning of the year. So stay tuned…

You can check out a “rough” draft of my website here  C² Fitness. I still don’t have business logos, but I’m working on them.

One Year.

In 2012, California, endurance, Fitness, Half Marathon, Life, Marathon, Moving, Running, San Diego on October 13, 2012 at 10:23 pm

Stepping away from fitness for a minute…

I’ve been in San Diego a year now. Man, how time flies! In 7 short years, we’ve lived in three states. North Carolina, Virginia, and now California. Virginia/D.C. is where our daughter was born and will always be “home” I think for us. But San Diego is a close, close second. It’s hard thinking about moving. Crossing fingers, that won’t be for a long time!

I’ve never been good at building relationships, because all good things come to an “end” a.k.a we move a lot. We’ve said “see you laters” to a lot of amazing co-workers and friends. It’s bittersweet, the Navy provides a great lifestyle, but so much is temporary.

I was skeptical of San Diego and California in general. But this is an amazing career opportunity for my husband and I just knew this was where we were supposed to be.

I have to say, San Diego has been amazing so far. Mostly, because of the people I’ve built relationships with. I’ve met some incredible people, people who have welcomed me and never once made me feel like an outsider. I found an amazing running/triathlete group who trained me through my first full marathon. The connection you make through endurance running is one like no other. They are just as crazy as you are, people who just want to live their life to the fullest.

A small portion of our group.

We do so much more than run. We give back to our running community through volunteer work and time. It’s been such a fullfilling year, just because of these incredible people.

Getting ready to rock 13.1.

1st race here in San Diego!

It’s been a great running year for me.

San Diego & AFC half marathon.

San Diego ‘Rock & Roll’ full marathon.

ACT! for Autism 10k – 44:58 time. Placing 1st in my age group and 3rd overall female.

My first duathlon, placing 3rd in my age group!

Finishing out the year with Ragnar Relay and just signed up for Carlsbad Marathon the end of January. 26.2 here I come (again)!

I did a 10 mile training run this morning. Finished with an 8:30 pace, very happy with that. It’s the pace I’m shooting for during Ragnar.

My Reebok #getafterit t-shirt.

Wore this new shirt during my run, it held up nicely. You can buy one here. It’s not a true technical running t-shirt, but it held up nicely and I love the message on the back. Reminding me to ‘Get After It’.

MLB Postseason

In California, Cycling, Life, Weather on October 13, 2012 at 1:24 am

Is the MLB postseason a good enough reason to neglect real life? I thought so too.

My beloved Braves, of course, were eliminated by the Cardinals. I also love the Washington Nationals (I know, division rivals) but I love everything about D.C. after living there for 3 years. It’s been an exciting postseason for both American and National league teams.

Natitude is in full swing now!!

Go Nats!

Proud of the Nats!

So, it’s technically the wrong color, seeing as my husband is a Navy boy. But it’s the only hat I have. Maybe it’s time to order a new one if they win tonight? *crossing fingers*

Workouts have been few this week, not sure why, lazy maybe? I took my road bike out yesterday for a short ride. It was cut short by one of the 5 rains we have yearly…ha ha. My luck, I suppose.

Taking cover…

I took cover for the worst of it on North Island and watched it rain over the beach. It was hard rain and cold. Which made for an interesting ride back to my car. The worst part, my cleats were soaked and clipping in was a challenge. I appreciate the challenge, mother nature!

Pretty!

Back to the Nationals! I heart baseball!

SeaWorld

In California, San Diego, Vacation on October 2, 2012 at 5:16 am

On my parents last day here, we decided to visit SeaWorld. It’s one of my favorite things to do here in San Diego. I love to take everybody there, it’s a great park. Remember my running friend, Danielle? She works for SW and was able to give us the behind-the-scenes tour (this is twice she has done this for me). I have to say, she is amazing and I owe her BIG time! I apologize for the pictures, they were taken from my iPhone, so not the greatest.

Playing with star fish!

I talked mom in to picking one up.

Behind the scenes…the dolphins are SO curious and playful.

I LOVE them!!

Rescued sea turtles who are being monitored before being released.

He was huge!

First time up in the needle.

San Diego in the distance. Marine layer (fog) was rolling in.

Group shot.

More behind the scenes, petting sharks!

Sophie was scared of the sharks and wouldn’t pet them.

Peek-a-boo Sophie.

Waiting on Shamu!!!

“Shampoo” as Sophie calls them.

Such amazing animals.

I also took them down to Sunset Cliffs. Because you can’t visit San Diego and NOT see a sunset here.

Capped off our day with a drive down to Sunset Cliffs.

Gorgeous.

Hotel workin’ out & California Adventure

In California, Fitness, Vacation on September 28, 2012 at 10:17 pm

I have to give major props to my GNC GenetixHD backpack (that I got free w/ purchase)…it’s an awesome backpack.

I carried this backpack all over Disneyland for 3 days.

Also wore my Reebok Cross-fit Nano’s for 3 days straight. Have I mentioned I adore these shoes? Ran 8 miles in them last weekend and they were great!

Hotel ‘gym’ – got my WOD on!

Crossfit WOD ‘ Susan’: Run 200m (treadmill), 10 squats, 10 push-ups – 5 rounds for time.

No excuses next time you are traveling!

Day 3 of Disneyland was spent exploring California Adventure. Very impressed by this park and took advantage of the fast pass system because it was CROWDED.

California Adventure – Day 3

Notice how unhappy Sophie is?

Cousins

Alden meeting Donald Duck!

Like my Minnie ears??

Ariel’s Carousel.

Our Disneyland trip has come to an end! 😦 But we had a blast and I’m looking in to SoCal annual passes. Maybe next time, Sophie will be up for meeting the characters!

Disneyland Day 2

In 2012, California, Vacation on September 27, 2012 at 2:25 am

We did Disneyland Park 2 days in a row to make sure we got to everything we wanted to do. We did more in Fantasyland, New Orleans Square, and Critter Country.

On shuttle for day 2!

We missed the carousel the first day, but made our way back to it.

Alden

On the Columbia Voyage ride.

Columbia ship ride.

How Sophie spent most of her time in line for rides. A little nervous…poor girl!

Day 3 – California Adventures up next!

Disneyland – Day 1 & 2

Protein, coffee, supplements -check!

Making sure I have all my supplies for Disneyland!

All of our snacks.

One downside to being away for several days is taking food. It’s hard to eat healthy on vacation but definitely easier if I take most of our food from home.

Disneyland – Day 1

On shuttle bus headed to Disneyland!

In entrance line.

Ahhh!!! Who feels like a kid again?

The park is decorated for Halloween right now.

Back on Main Street…

Ending our day!

Didn’t make it 5 minutes before conking out!

Day 1 = success and two worn out two year olds! They had a blast though. Sophie wanted nothing to do with the characters but Alden had high fives for all of them. He got to meet Pluto, Goofy, & Mickey! I’ve been to Disney World as well and while it’s amazing and much bigger, there is just something special about Disneyland. It’s original and where it all started. The characters seem much more accessible and there are plenty of rides, even for our young ones. There hasn’t been much they can’t do.

What we did: Buzz Lightyear ride, Space Mountain (it was closed while I was in DW), Space shuttle ride, Mickey’s Toontown, Roger Rabbit ride, met characters. Lines were long on Monday, so we tried to do mostly indoor things. It’s HOT here in SoCal.

I’ll post about Day 2 later. It’s 3:30am here and Sophie and I are both run down and feeling sickly. Blah. California Adventure is in a few short hours!!

Leg Day

In California, Fitness, Life on September 20, 2012 at 11:47 pm

Today was lower body day. I thought I’d post the moves I did, by no means am I telling you that you should do them. It’s inspired by another workout I found a few months back, but I’ve since modified it with moves I like better.

Disclaimer: Make sure you are physically fit enough to attempt these workouts. Always consult your physician when starting a new workout program. Workout at your own risk. If you feel pain, discontinue exercise.

I did 3 rounds of the following moves. You always want to make sure your core is engaged and spine/neck are in neutral. Remember to exhale on the concentric (work) phase and inhale on the eccentric (easy) phase. Example: you would exhale when you push out of the forward lunge, or when you are raising back up. Inhale as you lower down.

Forward Lunge with weight. X20 each leg.

For both the lunge and side lunge, your knees should never overshoot your toes. Keep your butt back and down. Heels in to ground.

Side Lunge. X20 each leg/side.

Plank toe taps. X20.

(excuse my messy garage)

Mtn. Climbers. Go straight in to these from toe taps. Your abs and shoulders will be on fire. X20

Skaters. X20 each leg. If you need to, you can tap your foot for balance.

Weighted Calf Raises (back-to-back) X20 each position = 60 total. Hitting your gastrocnemius from each position maximizes the calf raise. Adding 30lbs adds resistance.

(Again, sorry that last picture is blurry. That’s what happens when your poor mother is in charge of pictures…sorry mom!)

Wall climb handstand. Starting position is down. X10.

Ending position.

I can’t stress enough, to be careful doing the wall climb handstands. This move works everything, so if you start feeling fatigued, you need to stop. Or lightheaded. I only do 10 at a time. Keep hands a little wider than shoulder width and engage your abdominals on the raise and descent. DON’T HOLD YOUR BREATH!!

CrossFit WOD was 10 weighted squats, 50 plank jacks. Back-t0-back, no rest. 3 rounds for time.

We also drove up to La Jolla (my favorite place in SD) for the afternoon.

Alden.

The tide was already coming in at 2pm.

Playing in tide pools.

Feelin’ Beachy!

In 2012, California, Fitness, Food, Life, San Diego on September 18, 2012 at 4:08 am

My growin’ girl!

So, I’m originally from East Tenessee and my parents are here visiting us in San Diego for a few weeks. We are going to Disneyland next week!!!! If you know my child, you know she is OBSESSED with all things Mickey. I mean, she will even watch the old school black and white  Mickey. I bought her a few classics off Amazon a while back. She l.o.v.e.s. him! We have all the plush toys, coloring books, plates/silverware/cups, movies, all of it. So I think I’m more excited to watch her experience it more than anything.

Anyways, we spent the afternoon at the beach today. It’s finally back in to the 70’s and it was a beautiful day.

Pretty girl.

My mom and nephew.

It was back to the grind today and I managed only 20 minutes of strength training today, oh well.

10 DB hang squats, 6 push-ups – 12 rounds for time. 100 plank jacks/mountain climbers alternating every 10.

Look who got new kicks!

Snazzy right?

What I’m eating…

Breakfast.

So I’ve finally gotten my coffee protein shake the way I want it.

What you’ll need…

4 ice cubes

1/4 c. almond breeze

1/4 c. coffee

2 scoops

GNC Lean Shake 25 – rich chocolate

Couple truvia packets (your choice)

It’s something like 240 calories, 4 g. sugar, 26 g. protein…

Hope you found time to be active today!!

The Mojave.

In California, Mojave Desert on September 26, 2011 at 5:11 am
After leaving Las Vegas, we drove through the Mojave Desert. The sun was brutal, and it wasn’t even the hottest part of the year either. It was about 102 or so, but you just couldn’t get away from the sun. The ac in our truck just couldn’t keep up. But, it was so pretty.

We made it to California!!!

So close!
