Gettin’ Inked.

My first tattoo…

This year has held a lot of FIRSTS for me. The most memorable ones revolve around running.

This has been a hard year, running has given me an outlet for channeling personal pain. I know for a fact I’d be completely crazy if not for running.

I’ve wanted a tattoo for a while, but not just anything and not just on a whim. It needed to have meaning and importance.

I decided to tattoo 26.2 in roman numerals on my wrist. I ran my first marathon this year while being 26. But more than just running 26.2 miles, I’ve endured a lot of personal struggles while being 26. This year has been one of survival and endurance.

I just celebrated my 27th birthday and I’m turning a new leaf over. I’m growing up and I’m ready to live my life. So this tattoo not only represents what running has taught me but represents the person I’ve become through running.

Finished product.

I’m movin’ on
At last I can see life has been patiently waiting for me
And I know there’s no guarantees, but I’m not alone
There comes a time in everyone’s life
When all you can see are the years passing by
And I have made up my mind that those days are gone

One Year.

In 2012, California, endurance, Fitness, Half Marathon, Life, Marathon, Moving, Running, San Diego on October 13, 2012 at 10:23 pm

Stepping away from fitness for a minute…

I’ve been in San Diego a year now. Man, how time flies! In 7 short years, we’ve lived in three states. North Carolina, Virginia, and now California. Virginia/D.C. is where our daughter was born and will always be “home” I think for us. But San Diego is a close, close second. It’s hard thinking about moving. Crossing fingers, that won’t be for a long time!

I’ve never been good at building relationships, because all good things come to an “end” a.k.a we move a lot. We’ve said “see you laters” to a lot of amazing co-workers and friends. It’s bittersweet, the Navy provides a great lifestyle, but so much is temporary.

I was skeptical of San Diego and California in general. But this is an amazing career opportunity for my husband and I just knew this was where we were supposed to be.

I have to say, San Diego has been amazing so far. Mostly, because of the people I’ve built relationships with. I’ve met some incredible people, people who have welcomed me and never once made me feel like an outsider. I found an amazing running/triathlete group who trained me through my first full marathon. The connection you make through endurance running is one like no other. They are just as crazy as you are, people who just want to live their life to the fullest.

A small portion of our group.

We do so much more than run. We give back to our running community through volunteer work and time. It’s been such a fullfilling year, just because of these incredible people.

Getting ready to rock 13.1.

1st race here in San Diego!

It’s been a great running year for me.

San Diego & AFC half marathon.

San Diego ‘Rock & Roll’ full marathon.

ACT! for Autism 10k – 44:58 time. Placing 1st in my age group and 3rd overall female.

My first duathlon, placing 3rd in my age group!

Finishing out the year with Ragnar Relay and just signed up for Carlsbad Marathon the end of January. 26.2 here I come (again)!

I did a 10 mile training run this morning. Finished with an 8:30 pace, very happy with that. It’s the pace I’m shooting for during Ragnar.

My Reebok #getafterit t-shirt.

Wore this new shirt during my run, it held up nicely. You can buy one here. It’s not a true technical running t-shirt, but it held up nicely and I love the message on the back. Reminding me to ‘Get After It’.

Disneyland Day 2

In 2012, California, Vacation on September 27, 2012 at 2:25 am

We did Disneyland Park 2 days in a row to make sure we got to everything we wanted to do. We did more in Fantasyland, New Orleans Square, and Critter Country.

On shuttle for day 2!

We missed the carousel the first day, but made our way back to it.

Alden

On the Columbia Voyage ride.

Columbia ship ride.

How Sophie spent most of her time in line for rides. A little nervous…poor girl!

Day 3 – California Adventures up next!

Protein, coffee, supplements -check!

Making sure I have all my supplies for Disneyland!

All of our snacks.

One downside to being away for several days is taking food. It’s hard to eat healthy on vacation but definitely easier if I take most of our food from home.

Disneyland – Day 1

On shuttle bus headed to Disneyland!

In entrance line.

Ahhh!!! Who feels like a kid again?

Main Street U.S.A.

Long day!

The park is decorated for Halloween right now.

Back on Main Street…

Ending our day!

Didn’t make it 5 minutes before conking out!

Day 1 = success and two worn out two year olds! They had a blast though. Sophie wanted nothing to do with the characters but Alden had high fives for all of them. He got to meet Pluto, Goofy, & Mickey! I’ve been to Disney World as well and while it’s amazing and much bigger, there is just something special about Disneyland. It’s original and where it all started. The characters seem much more accessible and there are plenty of rides, even for our young ones. There hasn’t been much they can’t do.

What we did: Buzz Lightyear ride, Space Mountain (it was closed while I was in DW), Space shuttle ride, Mickey’s Toontown, Roger Rabbit ride, met characters. Lines were long on Monday, so we tried to do mostly indoor things. It’s HOT here in SoCal.

I’ll post about Day 2 later. It’s 3:30am here and Sophie and I are both run down and feeling sickly. Blah. California Adventure is in a few short hours!!

Feelin’ Beachy!

In 2012, California, Fitness, Food, Life, San Diego on September 18, 2012 at 4:08 am

My growin’ girl!

So, I’m originally from East Tenessee and my parents are here visiting us in San Diego for a few weeks. We are going to Disneyland next week!!!! If you know my child, you know she is OBSESSED with all things Mickey. I mean, she will even watch the old school black and white  Mickey. I bought her a few classics off Amazon a while back. She l.o.v.e.s. him! We have all the plush toys, coloring books, plates/silverware/cups, movies, all of it. So I think I’m more excited to watch her experience it more than anything.

Anyways, we spent the afternoon at the beach today. It’s finally back in to the 70’s and it was a beautiful day.

Pretty girl.

My mom and nephew.

It was back to the grind today and I managed only 20 minutes of strength training today, oh well.

10 DB hang squats, 6 push-ups – 12 rounds for time. 100 plank jacks/mountain climbers alternating every 10.

Look who got new kicks!

Snazzy right?

What I’m eating…

Breakfast.

So I’ve finally gotten my coffee protein shake the way I want it.

What you’ll need…

4 ice cubes

1/4 c. almond breeze

1/4 c. coffee

2 scoops

GNC Lean Shake 25 – rich chocolate

Couple truvia packets (your choice)

It’s something like 240 calories, 4 g. sugar, 26 g. protein…

Hope you found time to be active today!!

Twenty Dozen

In 2012, New Year on January 1, 2012 at 6:46 am

Twenty Eleven. Wow, what an awesome year for us Culbersons! Our little family spent most of the year separated by A and C schools. At the beginning of the year, I remember wishing for 2011 to fly by, and it really did. We were united together for good in September and then the whirlwind really began. The move, Taylor starting a new “job” here in California, the Holidays, and now celebrating a New Year. I feel like we are finally getting settled here in Southern California. The biggest change is the culture. I don’t mean this in any way to be bad, but being a minority takes some getting used to. We are enjoying it here though.

Sophie just keeps growing and growing. Talking more and more and becoming her own little person. She has a sweet, loving spirit about her, but at the same time, feisty and stubborn! We cannot wait to celebrate her two years here with us. She is by far the best thing the Lord has given us. Without a doubt.

Taylor and I will be celebrating our 10th New Year’s together. I thank God each and every day for him. Sophie and I are incredibly lucky to have such a wonderful husband and daddy.

I hope 2012 brings each and every one of you happiness and much love. May the Lord bless you each day this New Year. May you be of strong mind and body, spiritually and mentally. Do something that challenges you. Do something you’ve dreamed of. Keep your friends and family close to you. Cherish them, because life is short.

Here’s to 2012, New Year and new adventures. May He bless you and keep you safe.

Blessings!
Cayla
